Eric’s Unique History Lesson

Eric’s Unique History Lesson

Before World War II

Ladies and Gentlemen, before World War II began, employees were honored and appreciated.  For example, employees had only 1 or 2 employers in an entire life-time.  And, there was no such thing as Forced Retirement.  Neither were there any hiring freezes like today that made it necessary for the remaining employees to do their own jobs and to carry the load for needed employees not hired.  And, in the household, people often referred to someone as the “Breadwinner.”

And, before World War II, there were employee Pensions, Gold Watch Ceremonies, higher starting pay, such as was the case with Ford Motor Company; and, when The Great Depression hit, the “man at the top” of International Business Machines (IBM) refused to lay-off any of its employees.  Plus, raises and promotions were easier to come by; so that employees could actually live within their Means.  And, with The Great Depression, the prices of Goods and Services stayed the same or went down.

#2  But, When World War II Ended

After World War II ended, a new War Cry emerged:  “The less you pay people at the bottom, the more you can pay people at the top.”  Now, employees were no longer as honored nor as appreciated.  Pensions, Gold Watch Ceremonies, and high starting pay went away. With the end of World War II, the prices of Goods and Services stayed the same or went up when Inflation set in.  And, that someone we used to refer to as the “Breadwinner” got replaced with both husband and wife are now working.  And, with employee starting pay, raises, benefits, and the length of employment going down or staying the same, employees were now in a game that they could no longer win.  So, with the end of World War II, Ladies and Gentlemen, it NOW became necessary to “Live Well Below Our Means.”
